In Search of the Killer Mobile App, Part 1: Will LMS Vendors Lead the Way for Higher Ed? - Eduventures

In Search of the Killer Mobile App, Part 1: Will LMS Vendors Lead the Way for Higher Ed? - Eduventures | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it
By Jeff Alderson, Principal Analyst

Think of the last time you told a coworker about an app, one you recommended that they download right away. Was it education related? Did it specifically target higher education users? We’re going to go out on a limb and assume that it didn’t, because—from where we sit—the “must-have” app for higher ed doesn’t exist yet.
Dennis Swender's insight:

I've worked with more Learning Management Systems than most. I've touch everything on this list. Most of what I need is there, although more often than not some central authority hasn't flipped the switches I need to get to the tools I'd use.

As far as killer apps, mobile is essential.  If an LMS isn't fully functional on a tablet, it's a lame duck.

No comment yet.

Aurasma can encourage learners to go beyond the classroom to connect and enhance what they learn by pulling resources from the physical and the digital and then sharing those augmented reality scenes with others.

Learning Objectives:

Write a multi-part fictional narrative that logically ties in with actual locations on the school campus.Create an engaging narrative experience for the reader through expressive and provocative narration, animation, and/or images.Evaluate and deconstruct the narratives of others through class-wide discussion and reflection of own narrative.
Gust MEES's curator insight, April 15, 2017 7:35 AM

Aurasma provides an image-recognition software for creating and sharing augmented reality experiences. Users pan with their mobile device cameras to scan images in their physical environment to trigger a separate image or video to play on their screens.

This is a great Idea of lesson plan. You can integrate productive skill with a little of exploration and the use of technology. it is new and fun way for the students to write.

Augmented reality without all the fancy hardware. Locations can be tagged as well as historical events and other data. There are many uses for Aurasma in primary and secondary schools and it would be a wonderful tool to help make museum exhibitions come to life.

Why You Should Care About M-Learning | LearnDash | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it

Mobile learning is becoming increasingly popular in the workplace. There are a variety of reasons for this, but many have to do with the accessibility of mobile devices, the savings associated with a mobile enabled learning program, and the convenience mobile learning affords the learner.

Lisa Nielsen: The Innovative Educator: Get Smart by Texting w/ @Text_Engine | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it
Text Engine was developed to offer cell phone users a means to search the web using their text messaging service. This is great news for educators and students in low-income and rural communities.

And that's a good thing, because while smartphones are popular, there is still a great need for text-only services in low-income and rural districts. There is also a need in districts like NYC that empower students to bring their own devices to school, but don't have the means to enable students to connect to the internet.

Qualitative Formative Assessment Toolkit - Guest Post from Reshan Richards - EdTechTeacher

Qualitative Formative Assessment Toolkit - Guest Post from Reshan Richards - EdTechTeacher | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it

Dr. Reshan Richards: "Each of these approaches allows teachers and learner to capture and create moments of learning, excerpts of understanding, and reflections of experience. Let’s pretend to be one of my 5th-grade math students from last year participating in an activity about tessellating patterns. The activity was to figure out what individual shapes, when arranged in a flat pattern with touching sides, formed a closed tesselating patter (a regular tessellation). This activity involved using physical manipulative objects (pattern blocks), a piece of paper to document findings (journal workbook page), and NCTM Illumination’s Tessellation Creator website as resources for engaging in the experience of exploring regular tessellation. Here’s how the QFAT could be applied to this activity with an iPad."

Janna Mattson's curator insight, March 5, 2015 1:37 PM

This tool has implications not only in the K-12 educational setting, but also in higher ed. It has the potential to support portfolio creation and on project based learning.

Dr Pam Hill's curator insight, September 16, 2013 9:46 AM

This is one of the first resources to actively use digital tools to upgrade the minutes before instruction starts.  In my professional experience this would be very useful.  I think this is a new area that can be developed further to build in opportunities for students to use technology to deepen their learning.  What do you think?  Would you use this new resource?

Chris Goldsmith's curator insight, September 20, 2013 8:33 AM
