Twitter, PLEs and PLNs

For all of the conversation occurring among educators about PLNs, there has been surprisingly little academic research on PLNs. With many educators using this term to describe their own informal learning habits, it is important for educational researchers to investigate exactly what this concept means to those who are using it as a term to describe a learning activity

The difference between a PLN and a PLE are people and tools.  PLN's are the people that make up a network.  PLE's, on the other hand, are the tools that help us learn.  The thing that connects these two things is technology.  Knowing what technologies are available to you to grow your network is essential.

Don't wait for PD sessions.  This article talks about how to take learning into your own hands and how you can do it 24/7.  Following hashtags and edchats is a starting point and you can do that even without a Twitter account. Connecting with a network is enormously underutilized.

3 Ways to Expand Your PLN This Summer - Daily Genius

3 Ways to Expand Your PLN This Summer - Daily Genius | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it
Summer is fast approaching; this is the time of year when teachers are preparing students for exams and trying to keep their classes from descending into the Lord of the Flies. When it finally arrives, summer is an important time for busy educators and allows them to relax, recharge, and often work on honing their craft in both formal and informal professional development. With the more flexible work schedule of the summer, it is also a great time to build up your Professional Learning Network (PLN) — especially one that expands beyond the walls of the classroom.

Terry Anderson's perspective ...

Alberto Rivera's curator insight, June 5, 2022 3:08 AM
This article talks about the three pillars of educational technology and one of the key pillars is learning management systems.  The other two are social media and personal learning environments. LMS is a huge part of the pillar because in a way it ties the two and seeing as how social media is looking to incorporate LMS also.
Maria Hoard's curator insight, June 6, 2022 12:09 PM
This article establishes three pillars for educational technology.  First is an effective LMS but the other two surround the use of social media and the development of a personalized learning plan.  The connected nature of PLN's allow for current research, expansion of learning, and high quality content creation/sharing.  This is a longer read but worth it.

Social learning: the revolution in eLearning

Social learning: the revolution in eLearning | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it
How can an age-old learning strategy, like social learning, make your eLearning course pop? Read this article and find out the benefits of social learning!

What is Social Learning?

Before we delve into the benefits of this type of learning, we need to understand what research in social learning tells us.

Social learning theory: The social learning theorists Bandura and Walters have described this theory as follows:

· Learning is not purely behavioral; rather, it is a cognitive process that takes place in a social context. This points to the learners’ preference to learn in groups. The interchange of knowledge and perspective creates new knowledge that is personal to the learner.

· Learning can occur by observing a behavior and by observing the consequences of the behavior (vicarious reinforcement).

· Learning involves observation, extraction of information from those observations, and making decisions about the performance of the behavior (observational learning ormodeling). Thus, learning can occur without an observable change in behavior.

· Reinforcement plays a role in learning, but is not entirely responsible for learning.

· The learner is not a passive recipient of information. Cognition, environment, and behavior all mutually influence each other (reciprocal determinism).
