I selected this article from Curatti written by Raymond Morin because it explains the latest results by Nielsen on the habits of social media users.

The biggest audience on social media is not millennials after all.

The Changing Landscape in Marketing Online

People between the ages of 35 and 50 spend the most amount of time on social networks. I agree that this reveals the younger generation prefer to spend their time on mobile devices.

Morin explains the details of the study and explains how brands need to respect the values of their community with genuine interactions on social media.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • The use of social media differs according to the type of platform that is used. For example, on Facebook 178.8 million users log on with their smart phone in the U.S.

  • Depending on the nature of the social network, the nature of the users also changes. They will interact in different ways with brands.

  • Generations also have differences. Millenials are most likely to follow a business to gather information about them and to be entertained. Gen X'rs tend to follow for promotions, and Baby Boomers follow for promotions and information.

How Gamification Uncovers Nuance In The Learning Process by Terry Heick Gamification is simply the application of “game” mechanics to non-game entities.

Marty Note
Love this:

The current issue around the idea is less about definition, and more about tone. Reducing the process of “gamification” to something whimsical, silly, or juvenile represents a fundamental misunderstanding of gamification as a process.

For years, classrooms have been gamified. Letter grades are indeed first subjective evaluations of knowledge proficiency, but once they are passed to the hands of the students, they become game components, passed around as proof of the completion of some task, or the achievement of some desired goal (mastering a standard, fulfilling the requirements of an assignment, etc. Here, rubrics become instructions to task completion.
###

Once game dynamics are in place the tribe is changed. Adoption of game mechanics to explain social interaction is a clear signal of a successful application of game theory to students or customers.

Does anyone DOUBT the impact of a well tuned game? "Well tuned" in this context means easy to play and understand, sufficiently motivating and fun to obscure or marginalize a "rebel" minority.

Using the LMS as a Social Network in a Supersized Course | EDUCAUSE.edu | Distance Learning, mLearning, Digital Education, Technology | Scoop.it

Large class sizes make it infinitely more challenging for college instructors to connect and communicate with individual students. This might not be a big issue if professors have an army of teaching assistants running smaller tutorial groups, but that's not always the case; in my courses, for example, hundreds of students meet in a single learning space for a weekly lecture or webinar. As in online classes of any size, having a massive group of students in a single location creates the real risk that students will feel anonymous and disengaged due to a lack of meaningful interaction with their professor and peers.
