On February 27, I went to a worksop on campus called Bringing Fair Use to Life. It was eye-opening and confusing all in the same breath. Copyright, Fair Use, Public Domain and Creative Commons can be very confusing because it is a very gray area and sometimes can only be settled in court.

Alex Mitchell helps bring some color to the gray are with examples of Fair Use in different forms of media and use. News reporting has a very wide scope of power to report and quote Criticism also has easy small guidelines to follow. Parodies are allowed extensive uses.

On the flip side acts of copyright infringement are discussed as well as punishments for those actions: copying online media, file sharing and plagiarism. Mot of these cases are resolved with civil lawsuits.

However, this also means we need to ensure that students really understand copyright, fair use, creative commons, and public domain. There is a pervasive feeling that anything on the Internet is free, it’s not. …
