Identifying Tensions in the Use of Open Licenses in OER Repositories

Identifying Tensions in the Use of Open Licenses in OER Repositories | ED 262 Research, Reference & Resource Skills | Scoop.it

We present an analysis of 50 repositories for educational content conducted through an "audit system" that helped us classify these repositories, their software systems, promoters, and how they communicated their licensing practices. We randomly accessed five resources from each repository to investigate the alignment of licensing information between the resources themselves, metadata pages and overall site policies. We identified a high level of incongruity that could lead to a limited impact in OER use and reuse. We discuss the lack of guidance in implementation of such repositories, particularly to those who do not have wide institutional support to implement such systems. We finalize with a critical discussion on the emphasis given to licensing in the OER movement, and how it may be an evidence of a clash between the social and legal commons.

OER: A Field Guide for Academic Librarians - Open Textbook Library

OER: A Field Guide for Academic Librarians - Open Textbook Library | ED 262 Research, Reference & Resource Skills | Scoop.it

We intend this book to act as a guide writ large for would-be champions of OER, that anyone—called to action by the example set by our chapter authors—might serve as guides themselves. The following chapters tap into the deep experience of practitioners who represent a meaningful cross section of higher education institutions in North America. It is our hope that the examples and discussions presented by our authors will facilitate connections among practitioners, foster the development of best practices for OER adoption and creation, and more importantly, lay a foundation for novel, educational excellence.

Hiding in plain sight This post lifts off from a piece I wrote in 2012 on Open Educational Practices. For me, the most complicated and difficult bit of that sentence is: 'I wrote' The citation for this paper puts my name at the front, but that hides a longer story. I wrote the words,…

Proving the value of digital and information literacy in higher education through Project DELILA

Proving the value of digital and information literacy in higher education through Project DELILA | ED 262 Research, Reference & Resource Skills | Scoop.it

As Project DELILA prepares to come to a close, Jane Secker writes about how the project has aided the development of new and innovative teaching methods and has embedded digital and information literacy…

Bringing together librarians, educational developers and learning technologists from a range of institutions, Project DELILA has proven the potential and value that digital and informational literacy can have for higher education teaching. The Developing Educators Learning and Information Literacies for Accreditation Project (DELILA) is part of a series of projects to release a set of open educational resources (OER) and has focussed on releasing materials relating to digital and information literacy that are suitable for use in teacher accreditation programmes in higher education.

OER Handbook for Educators 1.0 - WikiEducator

OER Handbook for Educators 1.0 - WikiEducator | ED 262 Research, Reference & Resource Skills | Scoop.it

Welcome to the world of Open Educational Resources (OER). This handbook is designed to help educators find, use, develop and share OER to enhance their effectiveness online and in the classroom.

Although no prior knowledge of OER[1] is required, some experience using a computer and browsing the Internet will be helpful. For example, it is preferable that you have experience using a word processor (e.g. Open Office[2] or Microsoft Word) and basic media production software, such as an image editor (e.g. Gimp[3], Inkscape[4] or Photoshop).

The handbook works best when there is some sort of OER you would like to create or make available to others, but it is also useful for the curious reader.

There are several ways to use this handbook.

Open Educational Resources at The Open University | Open University

Open Educational Resources at The Open University | Open University | ED 262 Research, Reference & Resource Skills | Scoop.it
We specialise in delivering effective learning experiences for adults which fit around their lives, whether it’s a busy mum in London working toward her degree, or a primary school teacher in a remote area in Kenya, improving her classroom practice. Over 70% of our students remain at work while studying. We use appropriate technology to break down barriers – for those with disabilities, isolated or economically challenged.  We are open – we aim to remove all barriers to education and set no entry qualifications.  We use a mixture of business models (free, fee, and donor support) to provide scalable and sustainable solutions. We deliver quality learning experiences on scale to over 170,000 students. Of the UK learners, 61,000 are eligible for financial support and 44% start undergraduate study without the entry qualifications they would need at a conventional university.

Open Data & Education

Open Data & Education | ED 262 Research, Reference & Resource Skills | Scoop.it

Key Points

Open data can help researchers and policy makers understand the education landscape, can provide information for parents and children about education facilities and their performance, and can be used as an input into education: making a connection between open data and Open Educational Resources (OER). Attention must focus beyond the simple availability of education data to also question how the data is shaped, presented, and used. This should address the ways in which, without wider policy interventions, making data available about education performance may ultimately reinforce stigma and social divides. There has been relatively limited overlap between OER and Open Data communities, although since 2013, the Open Knowledge Education Working Group has sought to build connections between them. There are opportunities for future strengthening of these links, increasing the use of open data as a key educational resource, and supporting more applied civic education.

Use of Open Educational Resources in E-learning for Higher Education - Open Educational Resources (OER)

Use of Open Educational Resources in E-learning for Higher Education - Open Educational Resources (OER) | ED 262 Research, Reference & Resource Skills | Scoop.it
E-learning encompasses not only technology but also pedagogical and instructional strategies to configure a complete learning environment based on the Internet. E-learning is nowadays widely used in higher education as a mean for supporting learning on academic programs. Concurrently, the Open Educational Resources (OER) are becoming a valuable alternative to improve access to high-quality educational content released under open licenses by outstanding universities worldwide. The conjunction of both concepts can configure a strategy to improve the quality of the curricula in the higher education institutions, particularly in development countries, in order to equalize the learning outcomes of international academic programs and to reduce the cost associated with educational content development. This work aims to achieve a preliminary understanding of the potential of the OER availability to be used in E-learning environments. As a case study, we have conducted an exploration of the feasibility of using OER to supplement E-learning environments for Higher Education in Computer Science at Ecuador. The search of the OER suitable to be used for this purpose has been performed on all categories of OER websites, including Open Courseware projects of prestigious universities. Moreover, this paper highlights the main barriers as well as the opportunities derived from adopting OER in E-learning environments.

Academic Libraries and Open Educational Resources: Developing Partnerships | ALA Annual 2016

Academic Libraries and Open Educational Resources: Developing Partnerships | ALA Annual 2016 | ED 262 Research, Reference & Resource Skills | Scoop.it
A number of higher education–focused sessions at the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference touched on issues surrounding student retention and completion—and with the costs of tuition, housing, and materials constantly rising, saving students money is a major consideration. When the conversation includes state and community colleges, and a student body that may have less access to financial resources, finding strategies to cut costs becomes more important than ever.
