The End Of College Is Coming by @DisruptionHedge Stephen McBride -

The End Of College Is Coming by @DisruptionHedge Stephen McBride -  | Educational Leadership | Scoop.it

The cost of a four-year degree has shot up 15X in the past 40 years. Despite the crazy cost, college is still worth it for many folks today. And it's matter of time when certain disruptors start offering real college degree courses for much fewer costs.

Here’s My Prediction for How the Disruption Will Play Out.

It’s only a matter of time before Coursera and other online disruptors start offering real college degree courses. What happens when you can get a bona fide online college degree—one that confers the exact same benefits of an in-person college degree—for a couple of thousand dollars? The number of kids going to traditional college will crater. And schools will be forced to slash their tuition costs. Many top American colleges are already making this shift. You can get a degree from Ivy League school University of Pennsylvania over the internet now. The best part? Online tuition costs roughly half what you’d pay versus sitting in a lecture hall... even though the course material is identical. Look, we’re barely in the first inning of disrupting education. Who knows, maybe in a few years the likes of Google and Amazon will open up their own colleges. You’ll get trained by Google for free. And when you finish, Google will charge companies to recruit you.

OECD: The world must invest in education technology - Digital Innovation is critical | Educational Leadership | Scoop.it
We recently told you about Canada’s blossoming tech scene. Now, some of the world’s biggest education influencers are gathering in Toronto to shape our schools of the future. Andreas Schleicher, a Director at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), is just one acclaimed speaker who’ll be tackling themes of big data, gamification, social media, coding and digital culture at …

As emphasized in the excerpt below, I picture this as the old serfdom... Those who are fully digitally literate will live in the castle and those who are not will not. Further, they will be woefully ignorant of what is going on within those walls.  We must make being digital not just trendy but instead create a culture where people realize that it is a landscape that has become an intricate part of living on the planet.  It is not 'other' and people there are not 'those people' but rather a fully integrated part of humanity.

"“Students unable to navigate through a complex digital landscape will no longer be able to participate fully in the economic, social and cultural life around them,” he explained."
