Prisons seem an unlikely source of outstanding university students, but it is. What’s more, those who have done such study are much less likely to reoffend when they get out.

I taught in New Zealand's maximum security prison for a couple of years when AUT held the education contract there. I taught 'fitness foundations' which was popular due to the physicality culture in many prisons. I made a mistake one day wearing a sweatshirt of a specific colour and the guards made me take it off before I went in as it was aligned to one gang. Graduation had all these tough grown men crying with one saying it was the first study event he had passed in his whole life.

The importance of providing education to imprisoned people (opinion)

The importance of providing education to imprisoned people (opinion) | Educational Leadership | Scoop.it
Imprisoned people are desperate to become students, and that desire and economics mandate that we heed their calls, argues Doran Larson.
Peter Mellow's insight:
I taught at a maximum security prison once (my University had a contract to provide education there). It was a challenge, but when we had our first graduation event, the students were very happy and I know that some of them, when they got out, managed to get jobs and are good citizens now. Well worth it from a society perspective.

Academics could learn a lot from volunteering in a penal institution — about teaching, technology, and the value of a liberal-arts education.
Peter Mellow's insight:
When I was a senior lecturer at AUT University, I used to teach one morning a week at Paremoremo, New Zealand's maximum security prison with Mike Pitama from the Te Wero course. It was very satisfying when the first group of students graduated with their 'Fitness Foundations' certificate.
