Hospitals and Healthcare
There are many challenges facing hospitals and healthcare in the modern world we are living in. I've created this curation collection to save articles that help me understand what modern health in society is.  The articles here are general in nature and placed here to promote discussion. We advise that you talk with your health professional before changing any of your medication or treatment options.  Any of the online courses listed here may (or may not) be open for access or enrolment. Most are free to browse, some may charge a small fee if you wish to receive a certificate or record of learning.   Every effort is made to ensure that these links are up to date and be aware that some of these articles may be behind a 'paywall'. If you can’t get into an article, email me and I may be able to assist.  Views are my own.

Covid destroyed lives spent together. Now those left behind must say farewell by Zoom

Covid destroyed lives spent together. Now those left behind must say farewell by Zoom | Hospitals and Healthcare | Scoop.it
Trish Skinner and her husband sit on a couch, flip open their iPad cover, and open Zoom. Skinner is attending her father's funeral. Dozens of relatives will join her on this call.

One hundred miles away, near the southern English coast, someone holds up an iPhone as a coffin containing the body of Herbert John Tate, 103, is lowered into a wet, clay-lined grave.
The Zoom call is as much closure as Skinner, 72, can get -- at least for now.
"It's not how it's supposed to be," she says. "There's no interaction, physically. And that's the biggest thing that's missing during this terrible time."

“Use Skype advisedly”: practices urged to use standards-based telehealth platforms

“Use Skype advisedly”: practices urged to use standards-based telehealth platforms | Hospitals and Healthcare | Scoop.it
Telehealth experts are recommending that healthcare organisations use standards-based telehealth platforms rather than consumer-grade apps like Skype or Facetime when remotely consulting with patients during the coronavirus outbreak. The Australasian Telehealth Society (ATHS) says Skype and Facetime are not secure platforms and they needed to be used advisedly. The call comes as the federal government confirms a new MBS item number will be made available on Friday to GPs, specialists, nurses and mental health practitioners for bulk-billed consultations with affected patients by phone or video.
Peter Mellow's insight:
I appreciate what this article is trying to raise, but don't think it is balanced. While 'consumer grade apps' such as Skype and Facetime are 'less' secure, they do have some level of security (FaceTime traffic is end-to-end encrypted using AES-256; and Skype uses 256-bit AES encryption). More importantly, they are the apps that are most accessible on consumer devices and probably the apps that patients are most familiar with. Also there was no mention of ZOOM.

My other concern is that the 'secure' platforms you mention are all proprietary systems, and while many have a free client; by their nature may be less accessible to patients/consumers. Let's use what people know and have instead of forcing a system that may be more challenging to use and cause frustration and therefore a risk of giving up and not getting care.

User experience (UX) and user interface (UI) are important considerations in any technology solution, healthcare or not. Thanks.
