Hospitals and Healthcare
There are many challenges facing hospitals and healthcare in the modern world we are living in. I've created this curation collection to save articles that help me understand what modern health in society is.  The articles here are general in nature and placed here to promote discussion. We advise that you talk with your health professional before changing any of your medication or treatment options.  Any of the online courses listed here may (or may not) be open for access or enrolment. Most are free to browse, some may charge a small fee if you wish to receive a certificate or record of learning.   Every effort is made to ensure that these links are up to date and be aware that some of these articles may be behind a 'paywall'. If you can’t get into an article, email me and I may be able to assist.  Views are my own.

Effect of exercise for depression: systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials. In The BMJ

Effect of exercise for depression: systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials. In The BMJ | Hospitals and Healthcare | Scoop.it

Conclusions: Exercise is an effective treatment for depression, with walking or jogging, yoga, and strength training more effective than other exercises, particularly when intense. Yoga and strength training were well tolerated compared with other treatments. Exercise appeared equally effective for people with and without comorbidities and with different baseline levels of depression. To mitigate expectancy effects, future studies could aim to blind participants and staff. These forms of exercise could be considered alongside psychotherapy and antidepressants as core treatments for depression.

Ramon Antonio Matta (Content Done Write)'s curator insight, November 26, 2023 11:13 AM

The article sheds light on the increasing rates of depression in the United States, which is a mental health crisis that is often misunderstood and inadequately addressed. According to a Gallup Poll conducted in 2023, almost 18% of US adults are grappling with or receiving treatment for depression, highlighting the severity of the issue. There are several reasons for this rise, including social isolation, fear of infection, psychological exhaustion, substance abuse, and disruptions in mental health care. Women, young adults, and Black and Hispanic adults are experiencing the fastest rates of increase. Furthermore, the incidence of major depression among adolescents aged 12-17 is also on the rise, which poses a significant challenge to society and healthcare systems.

Diagnosing and treating depression remains challenging due to the complex nature of potential symptoms and the fact that antidepressants, which are the first-line treatment, do not provide a complete response for 70% of patients. This calls for a reevaluation of our approach to treating depression and the need for alternative methods and therapies.

The article emphasizes the importance of a multifaceted approach to managing depression, including seeking help from a mental health professional, maintaining close relationships, persisting in seeking help, and embracing gratitude. It is particularly noteworthy that maintaining a positive attitude and avoiding negative thoughts can also serve as protective factors against depression.

Numerous studies support that focusing on what we are grateful for can foster a positive outlook, combat despair and hopelessness, and prevent depression.
