Hospitals and Healthcare
There are many challenges facing hospitals and healthcare in the modern world we are living in. I've created this curation collection to save articles that help me understand what modern health in society is.  The articles here are general in nature and placed here to promote discussion. We advise that you talk with your health professional before changing any of your medication or treatment options.  Any of the online courses listed here may (or may not) be open for access or enrolment. Most are free to browse, some may charge a small fee if you wish to receive a certificate or record of learning.   Every effort is made to ensure that these links are up to date and be aware that some of these articles may be behind a 'paywall'. If you can’t get into an article, email me and I may be able to assist.  Views are my own.

Why wait til we are dying to grapple with death?

Why wait til we are dying to grapple with death? | Hospitals and Healthcare | Scoop.it
“Imagine this is the last day of your life. You won’t know which day it is but you will have a last day. Between now and then, carry yourself as if this is that last day.” So says Stephen Jenkinson, professor of theology at Harvard University and author of Die Wise and Come of Age.

In his five years working in palliative care – which he dubs “the death trade” – Jenkinson met hundreds of dying people and their families, and witnessed a ‘wretched anxiety’ around the end of life. He describes himself as a grief monger and exhorts us to die wise and well, unlike the masses in aged care institutions and hospitals all over the Western world.

Matt Morgan: Hello from the other side

Matt Morgan: Hello from the other side | Hospitals and Healthcare | Scoop.it
Instead, I cared about the greeting that the receptionist gave, how clean the toilets were, whether the doctors pronounced his name correctly. And when I was asked what advice I had for my in-laws, my response also surprised me. I didn’t advise on what tests should be done next, or what procedures he needs to have. Instead, I simply said “Make sure you bring in a photo of him with his son and put it on the end of his bed.” I wanted to short circuit the disease-identity mentality that we are all guilty of in the intensive care unit. I wanted to bring back humanity to counteract the bright digital physiology of critical illness. When you say hello from the other side, it is often the things that you think about the least during a busy clinical shift that you really care about. And so, I think, do patients.

Nora McInerny: We don't "move on" from grief. We move forward with it

Nora McInerny: We don't "move on" from grief. We move forward with it | Hospitals and Healthcare | Scoop.it
In a talk that's by turns heartbreaking and hilarious, writer and podcaster Nora McInerny shares her hard-earned wisdom about life and death. Her candid approach to something that will, let's face it, affect us all, is as liberating as it is gut-wrenching. Most powerfully, she encourages us to shift how we approach grief. "A grieving person is going to laugh again and smile again," she says. "They're going to move forward. But that doesn't mean that they've moved on."
