Hospitals and Healthcare
There are many challenges facing hospitals and healthcare in the modern world we are living in. I've created this curation collection to save articles that help me understand what modern health in society is.  The articles here are general in nature and placed here to promote discussion. We advise that you talk with your health professional before changing any of your medication or treatment options.  Any of the online courses listed here may (or may not) be open for access or enrolment. Most are free to browse, some may charge a small fee if you wish to receive a certificate or record of learning.   Every effort is made to ensure that these links are up to date and be aware that some of these articles may be behind a 'paywall'. If you can’t get into an article, email me and I may be able to assist.  Views are my own.

Probiotics labelled 'quite useless'

Probiotics labelled 'quite useless' | Hospitals and Healthcare | Scoop.it

Dr Eran Elinav said it was wrong to expect an off-the-shelf probiotic to work for everyone.

He says that in the future probiotics will need to be tailored to the needs of individual patients.

He told the BBC: "And in that sense just buying probiotics at the supermarket without any tailoring, without any adjustment to the host, at least in part of the population, is quite useless."

The research group also looked at the impact of probiotics after a course of antibiotics, which wipe out both good and bad bacteria.
Their trial on 46 people, also in the journal Cell, showed it led to delays in the normal healthy bacteria re-establishing themselves.

Dr Elinav added: "Contrary to the current dogma that probiotics are harmless and benefit everyone, these results reveal a new potential adverse side effect of probiotic use with antibiotics that might even bring long-term consequences."

Peter Mellow's curator insight, September 6, 2018 11:37 PM

I do like James Hamblin's review of the article:

Translation: for rebuilding the gut microbiome after taking antibiotics, those expensive probiotics at places like Whole Foods are less effective than ingesting one’s own feces. (pre-antibiotic stockpiles of it, administered in a medical setting, not a DIY project).

Lower-fat diet reduces women’s risk of dying from breast cancer, study says

Lower-fat diet reduces women’s risk of dying from breast cancer, study says | Hospitals and Healthcare | Scoop.it
Women who followed a lower-fat diet rich in fruits, vegetables and grains had a lower risk of dying of breast cancer than those on a higher-fat diet, according to the results of major study released Wednesday.

The conclusions, from the latest analysis of the federally funded Women’s Health Initiative, provide the first randomized clinical-trial evidence that diet can reduce postmenopausal women’s risk of dying of breast cancer, the researchers said. Past observational studies, which do not measure cause and effect, have had inconsistent findings.

Extra meal saves frail patients

Extra meal saves frail patients | Hospitals and Healthcare | Scoop.it

Hospitals cut the number of deaths among elderly patients with a fractured hip by half simply by appointing a staff member to give them extra food.

A pilot scheme at five NHS trusts in England and one in Scotland involved an extra junior member of staff for each ward who was given the job of keeping patients well fed. They were given a target of boosting intake of food by 500 calories a day, equivalent to about one meal.

Since the trial began two years ago the proportion of elderly patients who died within 30 days of a hip fracture has fallen from 11 per cent to 5.5 per cent.
