The Learning Analytics Challenge: Culture of Data or Culture of Evidence? | Contact North | Contact Nord | Learning Analytics, Educational Data Mining, Adaptive Learning | Scoop.it

In today’s complex world, post-secondary institutions are under competitive, customer, and regulatory pressures to account for our business performance, our contribution to the societies we serve, our research productivity, and most important, our students’ success. Learning Analytics is seen as a key tool to enable us to do so.

Episode 95: ‘Learning Analytics’ Could Lead to ‘Wal-Martification’ of College - Tech Therapy - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Learning Analytics, Educational Data Mining, Adaptive Learning | Scoop.it

"A number of experiments are using new kinds of data – such as how many times a student has clicked on an e-textbook or logged in to a class Web page – to measure and guide learning in new ways. That could improve the student experience, but it could also end up dumbing down college, argues Gardner Campbell, director of professional development and innovative initiatives at Virginia Tech."

I suppose it begs the question - what are effective ways of utilising the availability of these new data? - my first thought is that they may assist in identifying students who are finding difficulty.

Altmetrics in the Wild: Using Social Media to Explore Scholarly Impact

Altmetrics in the Wild: Using Social Media to Explore Scholarly Impact | Learning Analytics, Educational Data Mining, Adaptive Learning | Scoop.it

In growing numbers, scholars are integrating social media tools like blogs, Twitter, and Mendeley into their professional communications. The online, public nature of these tools exposes and reifies scholarly processes once hidden and ephemeral. Metrics based on this activities could inform broader, faster measures of impact, complementing traditional citation metrics. This study explores the properties of these social media-based metrics or "altmetrics," sampling 24,331 articles published by the Public Library of Science. We find that that different indicators vary greatly in activity. Around 5% of sampled articles are cited in Wikipedia, while close to 80% have been included in at least one Mendeley library. There is, however, an encouraging diversity; a quarter of articles have nonzero data from five or more different sources. Correlation and factor analysis suggest citation and altmetrics indicators track related but distinct impacts, with neither able to describe the complete picture of scholarly use alone. There are moderate correlations between Mendeley and Web of Science citation, but many altmetric indicators seem to measure impact mostly orthogonal to citation. Articles cluster in ways that suggest five different impact “flavors,” capturing impacts of different types on different audiences; for instance, some articles may be heavily read and saved by scholars but seldom cited. Together, these findings encourage more research into altmetrics as complements to traditional citation measures.

The Formation of a New Discipline

It was a sentiment repeated several times throughout the Learning Analytics and Knowledge 2012 conference: this could the beginning of a new discipline. It’s something I’ve heard at recent big data events too (namely at O’Reilly Media’s Strata conferences): we are forming a new field, one with new tools and new practices and new objects of inquiry.

SocialLearn Research Blog » PhD: Learning Analytics for Learning Power

SocialLearn Research Blog » PhD: Learning Analytics for Learning Power | Learning Analytics, Educational Data Mining, Adaptive Learning | Scoop.it

A key next step in this research programme is to harvest and analyse data from the traces that learners leave as they engage in social digital spaces, and to explore its relationship to other data sets and data streams. This PhD will therefore fund a technically strong candidate to design, implement and evaluate “Learning Analytics for Learning Power”. The project will deploy iterative prototypes in authentic use contexts, considering OU platforms as a starting point (e.g. SocialLearn [9]; Cohere [10]; EnquiryBlogger [11]), but open to data streams from new kinds of digitally instrumented interactions (e.g. from Pervasive Computing; Augmented Reality; Quantified Self). A possible outcome is an analytics architecture open to diverse forms of input, grounded in a theoretically robust framework, generating visual analytics with transformative power for reflective learners.

Desire2Learn moving to ‘predictive analytics’ with IBM

Desire2Learn moving to ‘predictive analytics’ with IBM | Learning Analytics, Educational Data Mining, Adaptive Learning | Scoop.it

This announcement caught my eye, as it suggests a move to link big data and big data analysis directly into online learning. It is just an announcement at this stage of an agreement to work together on developing predictive analytics for online learning. This seems to be a move beyond just trawling through the student information system and LMS to building predictive models of online behaviour.
