What is the Cybersecurity Challenge Luxembourg? The Cybersecurity Challenge Luxembourg is organized by C3, the Cybersecurity Competence Center Luxembourg, within the frame of the European Cybersecurity Challenge (ECSC) which is an initiative by the European Union Agency for Network and Information Security (ENISA). This competition targets open-minded creative digital natives. Our aim is not only to find talents but encourage young people to pursue a career in cybersecurity and related disciplines. Furthermore, through CSCL, we promote safe online behaviors by raising awareness on information security issues as well as develop expertise and interest in cybersecurity through challenging games and skill tests.

CHALLENGE

The SpaceResources.lu Challenge is an integral part of the SpaceResources.lu initiative and aims to discover innovative solutions that complement Luxembourg’s growing portfolio of activities in space resources utilisation (SRU). Specifically, the Ministry of the Economy is looking to strengthen the country’s expertise in promising areas related to the SRU value chain including, but not limited to, prospection, extraction, processing, manufacturing, and servicing. It is also interested in enabling technologies and fields related to SRU such as materials science, additive manufacturing, remote sensing, communications, robotics, data analytics, and artificial intelligence, but will not consider launch activities.

The challenge addresses enterprises, universities, scientific institutions, startup teams, consortia, and individuals of legal adult age from around the world willing to set up a sustainable business and to create economic substance in Luxembourg by establishing and registering a Luxembourg-based company.

The role of materials and hygiene in the transmission of bacteria in public places, a research project on the prevention of bacterial contamination that European School student Camilla Hurst has performed over the last three years in collaboration with both her school and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST).

This project won a special prize from the Swiss nutritional products firm DSM, who have invited Camilla to visit one of their research centres in Switzerland.

Camilla Hurst, grande vainqueure du Concours National luxembourgeois Jonk Fuerscher en 2015 et en 2016, vient de gagner le premier prix au concours de sciences international CASTIC à Shanghai !
C’est le deuxième prix international que l’élève de 15 ans de l’École Européenne du Kirchberg remporte cette année avec son projet sur la présence de bactéries à l’école. Elle a déjà été distinguée par la médaille Georges Charpak lors de sa participation à l’Expo-Sciences Europe à Toulouse au mois de juillet.

Quels sont les endroits les plus contaminés par des bactéries à l’école ?

Camilla travaille depuis 2 ans sur son projet de microbiologie “What do we bring home from school?” : elle a testé la présence de bactéries dans son école, leur densité et leur nature. Durant ce travail, Camilla a même mis en évidence l’ADN  d’une bactérie inconnue, découvrant probablement une nouvelle espèce !

En collaboration avec Dr Christian Penny et John Mallon, experts en microbiologie du LIST (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology), elle a pu montrer que les toilettes ne sont pas l’endroit le plus contaminé, mais bien plus les rampes des escaliers, les tables de salles de classe ou de bibliothèques, et les balles de basket dans la salle de sport !

Le lavage régulier des mains au savon n’est pas de coutume chez beaucoup de jeunes !
