Megatrends in MOOCs: #7 Gamification

Megatrends in MOOCs: #7 Gamification | MOOCs, SPOCs and next generation Open Access Learning | Scoop.it

"As digital learning environments, MOOCs are ideal for incorporating game elements. In fact, many MOOCs already have some kind of gamification, such as digital badges, which are becoming preferred alternative credentials in both the education and training spheres.

Gamification in MOOCs can take a variety of forms, from merely introducing a progress bar into courses (these now come standard in many learning management systems) to full-scale gamified training programs, with competitions, levels, content unlocking, rewards, and more…"

Comparison of Online MOOC Versus On Campus Course Delivery

Comparison of Online MOOC Versus On Campus Course Delivery | MOOCs, SPOCs and next generation Open Access Learning | Scoop.it

I report on the demographics and experiences of two cohorts of  students who completed an 8 week course. The cohorts include: 29,000 students who took the course via MOOC, and 100 students who took the course on campus at Georgia Tech. Of those students, the data is based on 879 respondents who completed the course online and 57 who completed the course on campus.  Both groups were provided the same curricula and were assessed according to the same criteria...

The great news is, designing active learning experiences for your MOOC is fun and won’t cost you a thing! ...

These insights are pretty obvious when you read them and a lot of MOOCs I have completed have used at least one of these methods.

How Useful Is Twitter for Learning in Massive Communities? An Analysis of Two MOOCs

How Useful Is Twitter for Learning in Massive Communities? An Analysis of Two MOOCs | MOOCs, SPOCs and next generation Open Access Learning | Scoop.it

"... an analysis of Twitter usage surrounding a German-language MOOC that could indicate future trends in technology-enhanced learning. Our research focuses on the Twitter stream accompanying the course and ask how Twitter is used and for what purposes by the heavy twitter users, by the educators / organisers / guestspeakers in the course and if tweets from “outside” get into to the stream.."

MOOC Research

MOOC Research | MOOCs, SPOCs and next generation Open Access Learning | Scoop.it

The dramatic increase in online education, particularly Massive Open Online Courses MOOCs, presents researchers, academics, administrators, learners, and policy makers with a range of questions as to the effectiveness of this format of teaching and learning. To date, the impact of MOOCs has been largely disseminated through press releases and university reports. The peer-reviewed research on MOOCs has been minimal. The proliferation of MOOCs in higher education requires a concerted and urgent research agenda. The MOOC Research Initiative MRI will begin to address this research gap by evaluating MOOCsand how they impact teaching, learning, and education in general.

Jacqui Kelly's insight:

A new research hub which is beign set up to evaluate MOOCs and how they impact teaching, learning, and education in general.

As the MOOC buzz continues to reverberate across higher education, the question of which subjects and populations these massive open online courses are best-suited to remains a mystery. The data released so far by the companies that run MOOC platforms have offered little insight beyond what countries students are logging in from and some information on who took a particular computer science course.
