OER adoption has the power to give students agency, report argues

OER adoption has the power to give students agency, report argues | Open Educational Resources | Scoop.it

-Awareness of OER has grown in recent years, with some institutions throwing their full support behind such materials for their ability to drive down college costs for students. In the new report, Achieving the Dream argued that using OER can also lead to the development of innovative teaching strategies centered on equity and inclusion. The report calls these methods open educational practices, or OEP.

Researchers identified five common characteristics associated with this type of education:

1- Student agency or ownership over courses.
2- Inclusive content tailored to students' backgrounds.
3- Student collaboration on new theories or content that can be used in future assignments.
4- Assignments meant to boost critical consciousness, which involves developing students' ability to identify and address power imbalances.
5- Classroom culture that fosters respect between students and instructors.

Anaeli Villarreeal's curator insight, May 14, 9:57 AM
The SkillsCommons project, initiated in 2013 under California State University and MERLOT, led by Gerry Hanley, aimed to create a large repository of educational materials for workforce development. Supported by grants totaling nearly $2 billion from the Trade Adjustment Assistance for Community Colleges and Career Training (TAACCCT) program, it has become the world's largest collection of its kind. With over 180,000 users and 1.6 million downloads, it offers various resources including e-textbooks, online courses, and program management documents. Hanley's experience as both the executive director of MERLOT and the director of SkillsCommons has influenced its design and operation. The project team has been responsive to user needs, continuously developing new features and functions to enhance navigation and support users effectively.

Anaeli Villarreeal's curator insight, May 14, 9:55 AM
The Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program (HEPPP) in Australia supports students from low socio-economic (SES), Indigenous, and regional backgrounds to access university education. Funded by the Federal Government, it aids universities in implementing strategies to improve access, retention, and completion rates of these students. The funding is allocated based on the proportion of low SES students at each university, and interested teachers can contact Howard Errey or project lead Jack Dunstan for resource access.

Anaeli Villarreeal's curator insight, May 14, 10:02 AM
OpenStax, a nonprofit initiative founded by Rice professor Richard Baraniuk, has revolutionized education by providing free digital textbooks in subjects like physics, calculus, and psychology, accessible to students worldwide. Initially focused on curating resources, OpenStax shifted to content creation amid rising demand for affordable, high-quality materials during the Great Recession, publishing its first five textbooks in 2012. Now boasting a library of three dozen titles, OpenStax is credited with pioneering open educational resources (OER), disrupting traditional publishing and curbing skyrocketing textbook prices. While for-profit publishers attempt to recoup revenue through costly digital homework systems, some built around OpenStax materials, the nonprofit is challenging this model with its own affordable software, aiming to provide access to educational resources for just $10 per student, and continuing to shape the landscape of education.
