How ‘Captain America’ is just one piece of Disney’s plan to reinvent entertainment

How ‘Captain America’ is just one piece of Disney’s plan to reinvent entertainment | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it
The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Michael Cavna:  "Disney is thinking so far beyond sequels — first with its Marvel Cinematic Universe, next with its Star Wars galaxies — that it is now fully, successfully engaging viewers across interlocking narratives. Each time a film like “Civil War” can land with audiences — building upon and/or introducing a dozen key characters — the universe can move not just linearly, but also multilaterally."

Tom George's curator insight, May 10, 2016 8:31 PM
Pure genius! Most of us are not in the entertainment business. But what does great entertainment and story telling have to do with great marketing. Answer. Everything.

A very smart play from Disney. You can use this strategy in your business. If you are creative and come up with a plan. If you need some ideas just ask.

The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Chris Osterndorf:  "From films, to toys, to parks, Walt Disney's original vision has come to fruition so completely it’s hard to imagine even he knew what was possible.  And one of the chief ways Disney has kept that original vision intact is by building a reputation for being very, very litigious."

How will this effect the people sitting behind?
Katie Chase's curator insight, December 5, 2013 9:55 AM

This defeats the purpose of going to the movie theater entirely. It does not make sense to have everyone in the audience bring their tablet to the screening to be able to interact. When everyone in the theater is on a tablet, who is actually watching the film? Audience interactions are a great idea but they are not appropriate for places such as movie theaters. –Aellise Czupryna

It's called Infinity and, if Skylanders is anything to go by, we're going to be hearing a lot about it in the next few months.  Must say, I don't mind ... it looks pretty cool.  It combines characters from multiple Disney storyworlds into a single game with the potential to mix and match them in levels of your own creation.  John Lasseter has described it as “a tool chest for creativity".

I really like the transmedia storytelling idea, but simultaneous transmedia? i'm not so sure...what happens to the unfiltered narration experience? i'm more for the before and after. unless films are actually written with transmedia in mind. simply transmedia-ing existing films won't work. at least not for the core story.
