'Star Wars' Proves How Much the Experience Still Matters to Most

'Star Wars' Proves How Much the Experience Still Matters to Most | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it
The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Alex Billington:  "Many moviegoers (myself included) have already seen the new Star Wars two or three times, with plans to catch it a few more times while it's playing in theaters. This will definitely help set a box office precedent but beyond that it's proof it's possible to make storytelling so valuable that, even if it's not the best movie of the year, people are willing to pay to re-watch up to four or five or six times. That's remarkable."

You also may know about digital paper dolls, Mood-o-meters, and 3-d printed models at the the PEM. How does the Peabody Essex Museum so consistently produce such cool and meaningful interactive tech? I sat down with Ed Rodley and Caroline Herr of the Integrated Media department to figure it out."

Histórias cada vez mais partilhadas! A autoria que não é só do autor! “When it came time to write this book, I was therefore able to write directly to my readers, because I know them so well. For me, social media dissolved the border between author and reader, replacing that border with real intimacy.”

Know Your Audience: How Studios Failed at the First Rule of Storytelling in 2015

Know Your Audience: How Studios Failed at the First Rule of Storytelling in 2015 | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it
The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Alisha Grauso:  "Hollywood studios failed big in 2015 because they didn't follow a defining principle of storytelling: Know Your Audience."

Nathan Schultz's curator insight, November 25, 2015 4:50 PM

An entertaining opinion piece, author Alisha Grauso explains that one of the reasons why so many of the movies that were made in 2015 were box office disasters was because filmmakers did not pay enough attention to what audience members wanted to see.

The Steve Jobs movie, for example.  The fact that the movie was released four years after the man's death, thereby missing the "nostalgia window" in which audiences might have cared enough about Jobs to want to see a movie about him, essentially means that the movie was made without audience interests in mind, which should always be the foremost concern when selling any product.

How Video Games Have Become The Perfect Storytelling Medium

How Video Games Have Become The Perfect Storytelling Medium | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it
The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Robin Burks:  "Throughout the history of video games, some developers have used games as a way to tell a story. Now even AAA titles such as 'Until Dawn' embrace games as storytelling devices."

Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's curator insight, September 22, 2015 11:23 AM

This isn't a new concept, of course, but with the big push Sony gave for Until Dawn, it's an example of a growing trend of how developers embrace video games as mediums for telling stories.

Porque los Video Juegos se han convertido en el Medio Narrativo Perfecto

Nathan Schultz's curator insight, November 25, 2015 7:55 PM

The recent video game, Until Dawn, offers players the ability to choose the course of the game's narrative by giving the gamer the power to decide each character's actions.  In one scene, two teenagers are tied to a chair, with sharp spinning blades descending on their heads, and the choice of whether one-or both-of the teenagers dies is left entirely to the viewer.

This idea is fascination because it explores the notion that gamers should serve as the "director" deciding the fate of the characters on screen, which ties back in with the concept that modern audiences want stories to be subject to their will.

Robin Burks:  "Throughout the history of video games, some developers have used games as a way to tell a story. Now even AAA titles such as 'Until Dawn' embrace games as storytelling devices."

The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Damien Lawardorn:  "The real reason behind its creation [Scheherazade-IF], says Riedl, “is to probe the bounds of questions of how to get a computer to reason about, create, and understand narrative.” Given that humans are raised on stories, and make them a part of our everyday lives, Riedl’s goal is vital for any artificial intelligence if we want it to understand us."

Vivalist's curator insight, December 28, 2015 5:41 AM

The article explore previous attempts to integrate AI decision making into story telling in games and their limitations.

But it's easy to see great potential in addition to procedural game world creation. So these vast world can be realistically populated.

The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

ABC Radio:  "Fans have long had a role in influencing and in some cases helping to shape the works of popular culture they adore. But when they get restless in the modern age, they now have the resources to take a piece of fiction and make it their own. Some content producers find that assertive approach threatening. But others, particularly in the gaming sector, have begun to embrace it."

Kajsa Hartig's curator insight, December 8, 2015 2:46 AM
